Course Requirements
Participants must be at least 15 years of age before the final scheduled session and successfully complete the following two prerequisites
Prerequisite #1 - Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest. This sequence consists of the following:
Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on back side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed)
Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
Prerequisite #2 - Complete a timed event within 1 minute & 40 seconds. This event consists of the following:
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (Face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not permitted)
Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10lb object
Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out of or near the surface.
Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
2025 Water Safety Instructor Course
The WSI course trains instructor candidates to teach all courses presented in the Swimming and Water Safety program to all age groups. This certification is the gold standard and provides the most comprehensive training for swim instructors.

$50 non-refundable deposit, which goes towards overall course fee. Course cost includes the Swimming and Water Safety Manuals.
Pre-Requirements
1) Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.
2)Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
Swim 25 meters of: Front crawl, Back crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, & Sidestroke
Swim 15 meters of Butterfly (all consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4)
Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
Tread water for 1 minute
Course Completion Requirements
To become certified as a Water Safety Instructor, candidates must:
Successfully complete the Pre-course Session
Attend and actively participate in all course sessions
Successfully complete class activities, including the required practice teaching assignments
Score a minimum of 80 percent on the final written exam (40 correct answers out of 50 questions)
